On storage of blood samples, the glucose content (blood sugar) decreases continuously because the blood cells consume the glucose. In order to counter the problem, resulting from this, of incorrect analytical results it is conventional to add to the blood substances which poison the metabolism of the blood cells. However, the damage to the blood cells which simultaneously occurs thereby results in changes in the concentrations in the blood plasma of other parameters important for laboratory diagnosis. In addition, the extent of the preservative effect for the glucose is unsatisfactory. It is therefore proposed according to the invention to use as preservative in containers for blood substances from the group of carbohydrates or their derivatives which are able to replace glucose and thus reduce the consumption thereof. Substances of this type do not damage blood cells so that no changes in concentrations of other parameters occur in blood samples treated in this way. If the intention continues to be to determine glucose in blood samples alone, a considerably improved preservative effect can be achieved by simultaneous use of conventional substances and of substances according to the invention.
