PURPOSE:To attain cost-down by driving a liquid crystal shutter of a liquid crystal shutter arranged between an original and a photodetector in time division, dividing a reflected light and leading the light to the photodetector so as to use one several photodetectors to read an original picture. CONSTITUTION:In irradiating a light from an LED array 1 to a read original 2, the black part of the original picture absorbs a light and the white part reflects the light. A rod lens array 3 leads the reflected light onto the liquid crystal shutter array 4 and the image of the original picture 2' is formed on the liquid crystal shutter array 4 with nonmagnification. The liquid crystal shutters 4a, 4b... are driven in time division by a liquid crystal shutter drive circuit 6. When a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal shutter 4b, it becomes transparent and the others remain opaque, then the light transmitted through the shutter 4b is led to a photodiode 5 and a signal corresponding to a picture on the liquid crystal shutter 4b in the original picture 2' formed on the array 4 is outputted. Thus, one photo diode 5 reads the picture information of the original 2.
