The application relates to a series controller having a controllable resistor in a series branch, with a series circuit of an ohmic resistance and a Zener diode in a shunt branch, the breakdown voltage of the Zener diode being used for controlling the controllable resistor in the series branch. If the controller is not transferring any power to a load, the power dissipation in the controller is avoided by the fact that a controllable switch is inserted between the ohmic resistance and the Zener diode which switch interrupts the connection between the ohmic resistance and the Zener diode when no load current is flowing through the controllable resistance, and that the contact gap of the controllable switch is bridged by a capacitor.
