PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent copy of an original where a halftone image and a binary image are both present and to prevent moires from being formed by discriminating between a halftone image and a binary image in each area on the original and switching both automatically. CONSTITUTION:Signals to be outputted to a recording means are switched automatically according to the decision result of an area deciding means 70. Namely, a signal after halftone processing when it is decided that there is halftone information or a signal after simple binary-coding processing when it is decided that there is no halftone information is selected. The area decision means is equipped with a picture element detecting means which processes plural signals outputted by a series-parallel converting means outputting signals of plural adjacent picture elements in the main scanning and subscanning directions of an image reading means at the same time and decides whether an aimed picture element and its peripheral picture elements are in a dot pattern array or not with respect to a signal of each picture element and a dot detecting means having the 1st area detecting means which processes the signal outputted by the picture element detecting means and decides whether there is picture elements whose dot patterns are detected in the 1st area including plural picture elements or the number of the picture elements; when a dot is detected, the image is processed so as to obtain its halftone.
