PURPOSE:To obtain excellent copies corresponding to various originals and to prevent moires from being generated by specifying optionally a halftone processing operation mode, a binary image processing operation mode, and an operation mode where halftone processing or binary image processing is selected automatically. CONSTITUTION:An area decision means 70 which decides whether an original image is a halftone image or not and an operation specifying means which specifies one of the three operation modes are provided, and the signal outputted by a halftone processing means in the 1st operation mode, the signal outputted by a binary coding processing means in the 2nd operation mode, and a signal (output signal of halftone processing means or binary coding processing means) selected according to the decision result of the area decision means in the 3rd operation mode is selected as a signal applied to a recording means. Therefore, when the 3rd operation mode is selected, the area decision means decides automatically whether the image on the original is a halftone image or binary image to select either of the halftone processing and simple binary processing, so the processing is switched automatically every time the kind of the image is changed, so that a copy faithful to the original is obtained.
