The invention relates to a process for the preparation of an aqueous, low-viscosity alkyltoluene- or alkylxylenesulphonate and consists in neutralising alkyltoluene- or alkylxylenesulphonic acid with aqueous sodium hydroxide in the presence of such an amount of sodium chloride which is sufficient for reducing the viscosity of the sulphonate prepared. The sodium chloride can optionally be added after neutralisation of the sulphonic acid.
