PURPOSE:To perform electric discharge machining at a high speed and in high accuracy, by alternately applying strong and weak tension to act on a wire electrode by its tension controller and setting a working time of the strong tension shorter than the working time of the weak tension so that flection of the electrode can be corrected by restraightening. CONSTITUTION:If a control circuit 14 intensifies excitation of a coil 13 to actuate a clutch 12 in strong action, brake force of a roller 9 high increases causing large tension to act on a wire electrode 1, and if the excitation of the coil 13 is reversely weakened, weak tension acts on the electrode 1, and each working time of the alternately repeated tension can be set by the control circuit 14, here the working time is set such that the strong tension acts for a short time, ordinarily only for a short time of one second or less, while the weak tension acts for a long time. In this way, the electrode 1 applies the tension alternately acting so that flection, generated while the weak tension acts, is removed or less controlled by applying the strong tension, and the electrode 1, being averagely guided in a straight line by controlling a flection delay to be restraightened, enables stable machining in a high speed and high accuracy to be performed.
