PURPOSE:To easily decide the type and recording state of a recording signal on a magnetic disk by providing both a recording signal deciding means deciding the type and recording state of the recording signal in an initializing action prior to reproduction and a display means. CONSTITUTION:Prior to reproduction, an initializing action is made, and an RF deciding circuit 9 decides whether a frequency signal is present or not. If the frequency signal is detected, it is decided to be a video signal or not. When a synchronizing signal 38 taken by a filter 12 enters a microcomputer control circuit 1 and when an identifying signal 38 is inputted to the circuit 1 from a DPSK demodulator circuit 59, the identifying signal decides whether a video signal on a track is recorded in a field or a frame. And the decided result is stored in a memory. When an ID deciding circuit 19 decides that the signal concerned is an audio signal, the effect is stored in a memory. If a frequency detecting signal is not detected, the result is stored in a memory. Information in these memories is displayed on a display screen.
