Alcohols are recovered from alcohol/strong acid mixtures by contact with selected carboxylic acids to form a strong acid raffinate, and an alcohol rich carboxylic acid phase from which the alcohol is recovered. The raffinate is then contacted with an organic extractant to extract carboxylic acid therefrom, thereby forming a carboxylic acid/extractant phase and a separate strong acid phase.
