1,158,974. Sulphur curable polymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 10 April, 1968 [14 March, 1967], No. 17404/68. Heading C3P. A composition comprises a linear sulphurcurable EODM polymer, carbon black and oil, in which the polymer has a modulus (M 60 ) of 175-420 p.s.i., a glass transition temperature below 0‹ C., an inherent viscosity of at least 2À2, the oil is present in 75-200 parts per hundred parts of polymer (phr), the carbon black is present in from 52À5 to 300 phr, the amount of carbon black being at least 0À3 of the amount of polymer and oil. Preferably an EPDM polymer is used such as a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and 1,4-hexadiene. A preferred composition contains the above terpolymer having monomer unit proportions of 72/25/3, an M 60 of 250, and an inherent viscosity of 2À5, which is extended with 150 phr oil and 125 phr ISAF carbon black. In the examples, an ethylene/ propylene/1,4-hexadiene terpolymer is prepared by polymerizing the appropriate monomers in tetrachloroethylene solution, in the presence of a catalyst prepared in situ by mixing diisobutyl aluminium chloride with vanadium tetrachloride. The terpolymer produced was then compounded with naphthenic petroleum oil, ISAF carbon black, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and tetramethyl thiuram sulphide. |
