PURPOSE:To provide the titled dispersion stabilizer which is excellent in stationary stability and has excellent fluidity even under shear at a high temp. and which comprises a formalin (co)condensate contg. a sulfonation product of a particular polycyclic arom. compd. CONSTITUTION:A formualin (co)condensate contg. at least one sulfonation product obtd. by sulfonating a polycyclic arom. compd. such as (alkyl)naphthalene, lignin, etc., [e.g. naphthalenesulfonic acid (salt) or alkylnaphthalenesulfonic acid (salt)] is fractionated with a polymeric separatory membrane (e.g. polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane) to obtain a dispersion stabilizer for a coal-water slurry contg. 23wt% or less of a lower condensate having an MW of 800 or less in terms of sodium polystyrene sulfonate. 0.01-5.0 aforesaid stabilizer and, if necessary, a fatty acid or a metal soap, a thickener, etc., are added to a coal-water slurry having a coal concentration of 30-85wt%.
