PURPOSE:To attain high definition picture display by using a valve obtained by laminating a high resistance photoconductive layer, a reflecting layer for interrupting incident light from the 1st transparent electrode side and reflecting incident light from the 2nd transparent electrode side and an optical shutter layer consisting of a ferrodielectric film on a transparent base. CONSTITUTION:A reflection preventing layer 1 is formed on one surface of a transparent base 2 and a transparent electrode 3 is formed on the other surface. An optical shutter layer 5 having a ferrodielectric electro-optical effect is formed on the electrode 3 through a ground layer 4. Then, a light reflecting layer 6, a light shielding layer 7, a high resistance photoconductive layer 8a, and a transparent electrode 9 are successively formed on the layer 5, and finally a transparent base 10 is laminated. Optical writing based upon a semiconductor layer 12 is executed from the electrode 9 side of the light valve 11 formed by said procedure to change electric resistance of the conductive layer 8a. On the other hand, light projected from a light source 18 is made incident upon the shutter layer 5 through a polarizer 16 and the reflected light by the reflecting layer 6 is projected into a screen 23 through a polarizer 17. Thus, a high definition picture can be projected.
