PURPOSE:To attain a program searching action in an editing mode by setting a mark into a document to indicate an after-editing position and interrupting the screen scrolling action so that the input mark is given to the fixed position of a display device. CONSTITUTION:A character string supplied from a character input part 1 is stored temporarily in an input character string storing part 2 and then edited by an input character string a editing part 3. Then the result of this editing is recorded to an editing result storing part 4 and at the same time displayed at a screen output part 5 under the control of a screen control part 6. While a mark, e.g., control-J is supplied to an optional part that may be possibly edited later by means of an index input key set by a key 7 in a character production mode. When an original is supplied and edited, the mode position is set at the editing position search side. Thus the presence or absence of the mark control-J is checked for each line when the original is scrolled at the part 5. This scrolling action is interrupted when the mark control-J is detected.
