In a fuel injection pump for a diesel engine, the pump plunger (2') has at least one pair of control edges (36', 37') which communicate by a groove (34') with the pump chamber (7) and cooperate with an orifice (38) in the pump cylinder wall leading to a spill line (22). The start of delivery occurs before top dead centre when an inlet valve (11) is closed and delivery is reduced or interrupted for an interval during the delivery phase. The control edges (36', 37') may be inclined and the plunger rotatable by a linkage (55) to adjust the timing of the interval. Delivery ends when a relief valve (24) is opened. <IMAGE> |
