Benzothiophene (I) [R1=C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkoxy, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, trifluoromethyl, -NR5R6; X=-C(R4)=; n=0,1,2; R3= -C(=NH)-N(- OH)-R5; R4,R5,R6=hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl is prepd. for use as a cardiotonic drug. Nitrile compd. (II) is reacted with hydroxyl amine (R5-NH-OH) to give the compd. (I). Carboxylic acid form of compd. (II) is converted to carboxide, and then the carboxide form of compd. (II) is dehydrated to give the compd. (II).
