A method and a device according to the invention are created such that material surfaces can be cleaned by means of a corona discharge. In this case, the dust particles are in practice forced off the material surface by the discharges produced during the corona treatment, and are subsequently vapourised to a greater or lesser extent. Particularly when the surface is a transportation roller 2, by means of which a goods web 4 is transported or guided, the method according to the invention and the device can be used in a particularly advantageous manner. In the case of this application, the corona discharge for cleaning takes place when the transportation roller 2 is rotating, on two regions 9 which run parallel to one another and to the longitudinal axis of the transportation roller 2. A cleaning electrode 3 is connected in a known manner to a generator 1 which produces high voltage, while the transportation roller 2 is connected to earth. At the same time, the dirt which has been released and the ozone gas produced during a corona discharge are sucked away via a vacuum system 7. The corona discharge can take place both continuously and intermittently. <IMAGE>
