An unpressurised apparatus for improving the quality of drinking water is composed of a filler funnel (10) to be arranged over a pot-like vessel (16) and a throughflow cartridge (32) which can be inserted water tightly into the bottom (20) of the funnel, which throughflow cartridge is filled with treatment material. According to the invention, the cartridge (30) is constructed as a two-chamber cartridge having a central chamber (64), through which the flow is downwards, open to the funnel (10) via a sieve-like cover (74, 76) and an outer chamber (66) enclosing this, through which the flow is upwards and which is furnished at the top end with outlet orifices (62) distributed all the way round. The chambers (64, 66) are joined at their bottom ends. With this construction, multiplication of microorganisms and infection of the water contained in the apparatus from the outlet side are avoided and at the same time drying of the cartridge is prevented. <IMAGE>
