Protection device for capacitor 1 in leaktight casing 8 which includes a fuse 19 mounted in series with one of the plates 2, 3 of the said capacitor, this fuse being blown by melting when a fault current appears. This device includes mechanical means such as a piston 14 for bringing about the breakage of the fuse 19, these means being triggered when the gas pressure inside the casing 8 of the capacitor 1 exceeds a safety value.
