A method for calibrating optical rangefinders, a light beam being aimed from a transmitter at a reflective target and the phase difference between the light beam reflected by the said target and that of the transmitted light beam being measured by a receiver which is arranged alongside the transmitter, a filter being arranged between the transmitter and the target, whose distance from the transmitter is a function of the visibility prevailing in the case of a specific fog density, the transmission level and the scatter factor of the filter being set as functions of the distance and of the target from the transmitter and of the filter from the transmitter, and the divergence of the light beam being set by an objective lens, as a function of the visibility. <IMAGE>
