The invention relates to a device for tautening a belt band of a vehicle safety-belt system, with a pyrotechnically or mechanically driven tautening drum (20) which is provided with drivers (22) and by means of which the belt band can be pulled away out of the wearing region, in that the belt band is laid in a loop round the drum, whilst during the laying of this loop a clamping member (28) is activated immediately at the start of the tautening operation, in order to clamp the belt band directly behind a belt-band retracting and blocking mechanism (12), so that, during tautening, no belt band can be drawn off from this mechanism and therefore the entire drawn-in (tautened) belt band is removed from the wearing region of the safety belt. The efficiency of the belt tautener is thereby increased. <IMAGE>
