The sliding coding strip is intended to make it possible to shape the cover of one of the numerous target reference bars more easily and without errors and to carry out the decoding by means of three light barriers statically or optionally, by means of a light barrier, dynamically, during the forwards movement. This is achieved in that a coding slide is guided displaceably in a longitudinally running central section of the coding strip, which coding slide has a travelling wheel which moves transversely with respect to the movement direction of the coding slide, is pressed outwards by the force of a spring device and runs on a longitudinally-running corrugated or zig-zag-shaped guide surface of the guiding strip, in each case one reflective synchronizing track area being arranged above each corrugation trough on the outside of the coding strip.
