Process for the preparation of reactive hydrophilic latex particles labelled with dyestuffs or fluorescing compounds, characterised in that a monomer which is sparingly soluble in water or various monomers which are sparingly soluble in water are dispersed in water with a dyestuff or fluorescing compound which does not contain any co-polymerisable groups and, with the exclusion of oxygen, are homo- or co-polymerised by emulsion polymerisation in the presence of a water-soluble, radical-forming initiator but without the addition of an emulsifier or stabiliser.
