PURPOSE:To increase the strength of a fusion splicing part by fusion splicing optical fiber element wires to each other, then applying multicomponent glass powder with a flow fusion point over the fusion splicing part and heating and fusing it, and thus forming a multicomponent low-fusion-point glass layer at the periphery of the fusion splicing part. CONSTITUTION:Plastic coatings 2 at end parts of optical fibers 3 and 3' which have the plastic coatings 2 on the external surfaces of optical fiber cores 1 are removed to expose optical fiber element wires 4, which are cut so that the abutting surfaces of the optical fiber element wires 4 are at right angles to axes; and the end surfaces of the optical fiber element wires 4 are brought into contact with each other and heated and joined together with an arc. The multicomponent low-fusion-point glass powder 6 is applied to the surfaces of the cut optical fiber element wires 4 and the fusion splicing point 5 and heated and fused by an electric heater 7 to form the multicomponent low-fusion-point glass layer 8, thereby joining the optical fiber element wires 4 together. Then, a plastic coating 9 is formed on a low-fusion-point glass layer 8 to connect the optical fibers 3 and 3' together. Consequently, the strength of the optical fiber fusion splicing part is increased by the synergetic effect of an increase in apparent element wire diameter. |
