<p>Curable latex compsn. comprises (a) a carboxylated latex (I), (b) an epoxy resin (II) emulsion contg. an organo-soluble or miscible catalyst (III), and (c) a water-sol. catalytic curing agent (IV). The latex may also comprise a surfactant. (I) pref. comprises a copolymer of a vinyl aromatic monomer (Ia) and/or diene monomer (Ib), with an ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid monomer (Ic), esp. 0-75 wt.% (Ia)., 0-85 wt.% (Ib) and 0.5-25 wt.% (Ic). Pref. (Ia) is styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, a,r-methylstyrene, a,r-ethylstyrene, alpha-a,r-dimethylstyrene, a,r,a,r-dimethylstyrene, a,r-t-butylstyrene, vinyl naphthalene methoxystyrene, cyanostyrene, acetyl styrene and/or monochlorostyrene. Pref. (Ib) is butadiene, isoprene and/or divinyl benzene. Pref. (Ic) is (meth)acrylic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid and/or itaconic acid, or derivs. or mixts. (II) is pref. a polyglycidyl ether of a bisphenol cpd., a polyglycidyl ether of a novolak resin or a polyglycidyl ether of a polyglycerol, esp. a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and/or polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol F. (III) is pref. ethyl triphenyl phosphonium acetate or phosphate, methyl trioctyl ammonium chloride, alkyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, NEt4Br, N-dodecylpyridinium chloride or NBu4I. (IV) is pref. tridimethyl aminomethyl phenol, dimethyl aminomethyl phenol, dicyandiamide, ethylenediamine, etc.</p> |
