PROCESS FOR RECOVERING FURFURAL AND MONOCARBOXYLIC ACIDS FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

1. A method of obtaining furfural and monocarboxylic acids, more particularly acetic acid, from aqueous solutions, more particularly from waste waters from the cellulose industry, liquid-liquid extraction with organic extraction agents and subsequent separation of the extracted useful substances by distillation from the organic phase, characterized in that extraction is performed in two steps as follows : in the first step, for selective separation of furfural, the aqueous solution is treated with a halogenated hydrocarbon having a boiling-point below that of furfural, in the second step, for separating the monocarboxylic acids, the raffinate from the first step is treated with a Lewis-base type water-immiscible second extraction agent, and the extraction agents recovered from the organic phases in the two steps are recycled to the corresponding step.
