A dish-washing machine having a washing container 1 for receiving articles to be washed has a circulation pump 6 for washing liquid, whose suction line 5 is connected to a drain 3 in the container bottom 2 of the washing container 1, and whose conveying line 7 is connected to a spraying device 9 arranged in the washing container 1. During the course of a washing programme section, such as prewash operation, main wash operation, subsequent rinsing operation, the spraying device is sprayed with washing liquid from the circulation pump 6. In order in this case to reduce to a minimum the quantity of washing liquid introduced into the washing container 1 in each washing operation, the circulation of the washing liquid is reduced or interrupted during the washing programme section. In this case, the full conveying capacity of the circulation pump 6 is so great that the washing water sprayed freely in the washing container or onto the articles to be washed and flowing down the container walls cannot flow back to the suction line 5 as quickly as it is conveyed by the circulation pump 6. In order to avoid the intake of air, the circulation of the washing liquid is repeatedly reduced or interrupted during the current washing programme section so that the washing liquid can flow from the washing container 1 back into the region of the suction line 5. The circulation is then released again until there is another risk of air intake.
