In order to be able to test a pipeline section-by-section for gas-tightness and/or water-tightness, a pipe section which is to be tested is initially sealed by means of two sealing collars (13) which are arranged on a central supporting pipe (12). A supply and extraction line (14), which emerges radially from the supporting pipe (12) and is located in the sealed region (15), is passed through the central supporting pipe (12). It is now possible either for gas or water which has infiltrated into the sealed region to be sucked out through this supply and extraction line (14) and detected in volume terms, or gas or water to be introduced into the sealed region, through said supply and extraction line (14), and to be subjected to a predetermined pressure, and subsquently, that gas or water quantity can be detected which must be supplied subsequently within a predetermined test time in order to maintain the predetermined pressure. In both cases, a practical overview is obtained of the condition of the tested section, as a result of which the decision on any repair measures can be made on a concrete basis. <IMAGE>
