Oxalic acid is prepd. from carbohydrates, esp. sucrose or ethylene glycol by oxidizing them with HNO3. Thus, 3920kg sucrose, 63507kg HNO3, and 9000kg H2SO4 is reacted for 17days within a processing system composed of a preliminary reaction system, a main reaction system, a gas-oxidizing system, and an absorption system to give 46% oxalic acid(based on the sucrose consumed). Consumed HNO3 per 1 ton oxalic acid is 1819kg. The process improves the product yield and reduces the consumption of HNO3.
