A shaft bearing has a housing (10) incorporating an internal oil reservoir (12) and means to connect the bearing to an external oil supply. Fitted in the housing (10) is a liner (30) which is grooved (at 40) to accommodate an oil ring (50) which dips into the reservoir (12). The liner (30) also possesses internal axial grooves (35) for feeding oil onto a shaft (S), the oil reaching the grooves (35) from the oil ring (50) via ring groove (40). Restrictors (37) at the ends of grooves (35) permit controlled oil escape from the groove and return to the reservoir (12). The liner (30) has arcuate recesses (33) at its ends, and the liner has a length to bore ratio of 0.87 to 0.92; thanks to this ratio, the bearing operates at lower power loss under various loads when flooded with, or starved of, oil. The bearing may be fitted with specially designed thrust pad bearings (60) also functional efficiently under flooded or starved conditions. |
