PURPOSE:To avoid smear and blooming by a method wherein a liquid crystal shutter is provided on a solid state image pickup device and unnecessary part of the light inputted to the image pickup device is eliminated and only the necessary part is taken out as a proper signal. CONSTITUTION:In a device employing charge coupling devices CCD, an insulating oxide (SiO2) film 2 is formed on an N-type semiconductor substrate 1 and a number of electrodes 3 are arranged in line in the film 2 to compose MOS capacitors. A liquid crystal shutter 4 is composed of a pair of separated transparent electrodes 5a and 5b with liquid crystal between them. A number of the shutters 4 are provided on the film 2 so as to make each one unit of the shutter 4 overlap above each one unit of the CCD. A transparent glass 7 is provided so as to cover the surface of the film 2 and the shutters 4. Then, by controlling the shutters 4 so as to shut off light completely or to transmit light, only an image signal from the image pickup plane of a specific region can be taken out. |
