A method for monitoring the cleaning state of a line for free-flowing, in particular liquid, foods, and a device for this purpose are distinguished by the fact that a measuring sensor (18) is arranged in the line (12, 14), which measuring sensor responds to the electrical conductance of the liquid in the line. If the line is cleaned using a cleaning agent, for example an acid, this change in the conductance is recognised by the measuring sensor (18) and stored in a control system (16). If after a fixed period of, for example, two weeks, the line (12, 14) has not been cleaned, an acoustic and/or visual warning is firstly given to the operator of the line system and, if still no cleaning of the line is carried out within the fixed period, a shut-off member (20) is actuated by the control system (16) which interrupts the flow of liquid in the line. The blocking of the line is maintained until the line has been cleaned. <IMAGE>
