In order to fill a container up to a selectable maximum filling level using a level control device, the procedure is as follows: first an outlet tank, having a relatively small cross section, is filled up to a specific filling level 10 which is situated below a selectable maximum filling level 7. During the subsequent discontinuous feed of further liquid from a supply pipe 15, a stored quantity of liquid from a collection vessel 16 is used to top up the container 1. The volume of the collection vessel 16 is equal to the difference in quantity between the predetermined filling level 10 and the maximum filling level 7. This ensures that the divergence in the filling quantity to be fed into the container 1 is very small. <IMAGE>
