Synthesis gas is produced from solid fuels, using endothermally (32 to 38) and exothermally (40 to 47) reacting gasifying agents, in a reactor (10) with a fluidised bed (14), a post-reaction chamber (18) located above and a fixed bed (20) located below. The rate at which the solid gasification residues forming the fixed bed (20) are taken off from the reactor (10) is controlled as a function of the height (60, 61) of the fixed bed (20) in such a way that the upper limit (24) thereof remains below that region (40) in which exothermally reacting gasifying agent is fed into the gasification process.
