[Also in Division B1] A gelled bituminous cut-back composition comprises bituminous materials (a), a solvent therefor (b), and a urea (c) produced by the in situ reaction of at least one aliphatic amine (d) and at least one aromatic or aliphatic mono- or poly-isocyanate (e). Also present may be fillers (f) or synthetic resins (g); (a) may be bitumen, natural asphalt, petroleum oil, still residues, plastic coal-tar distillation residues, petroleum pitch, petroleum resin, coumaroneindene resin or plastic-modified petroleum resin. Exemplified penetrations of (a) are 30-70; (a) may include propane-precipitated asphalt; (b) may be petroleum distillate, kerosene, fuel oil, mineral spirit, gasoline, turpentine, textile spirit, naphtha, benzene, toluene, CCl 4 , methylisobutylketone, or 2-methoxyethanol; (d) may have a C 6 -C 22 aliphatic group attached to an amine N atom, such a group may be N-normalalkyl or N-sec-alkyl, and may be branched, straight, saturated, unsaturated, cyclic, or arylalkyl, e.g. 9,10-phenylstearyl; (e) may be C 6 -C 22 aliphatic isocyanates or difunctional aromatic or aliphatic isocyanates or prepolymers thereof, e.g. toluene or hexamethylene diisocyanates or diisocyanates derived from aminostearylamine or aminomethylstearylamine; exemplified are oleil amine and cocoamine. In (c) the mole ratio amine/diisocyanate may be 2-2À8; (g) may be polyvinyl acetate, neoprene, alkyl cyclic polymer produced from the polymerisation of dienes and reactive olefins derived from high-temperature cracking of petroleum, or amorphous polypropylene. The compositions may contain by weight 90- 98% of a mixture of 30-70% (a) and 30- 70% (b), the remaining 2-10% being (c). The composition may be prepared by introducing (d) and (e) into a mixture of (a) and (b); this may be done continuously by introducing (d) and (e) into a stream of (a) and (b) proceeding to a spray nozzle. The composition may be trowelled, or applied as a stable invert emulsion obtained by adding 8-10% weight water. Penetration values of the gels are given. |
