1,174,625. Alkyl phenol/formaldehyde resins; neoprene adhesives. HITACHI CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 23 May, 1967 [30 May, 1966], No. 23964/67. Headings C3P and C3R. A magnesium oxide modified phenolic resin is produced by (a) reacting 1 mol. of a p-alkyl or p-aryl phenol (including p,p<SP>1</SP>-alkylenebisphenols) with at least 1À5 mol. of CH 2 O in the presence of a basic catalyst, (b) adding 3- 20% MgO to the product and (c) heating the mixture at 80-150‹ C. for ¢-8 hours until no magnesium chelate of 2,6-dimethylol-4-alkyl or arylphenol is detected. Reactions (a) and (c) may be effected in a solvent. 10-200 parts of the product may be mixed with 100 parts of polychloroprene and an organic solvent to produce an adhesive. The composition may also contain a metal oxide, e.g. ZnO or MgO and an anti-oxidant, e.g. phenyl-beta-naphthyl-amine. In a typical Example (1) p-tert-butyl-phenol is reacted with paraformaldehyde in toluene and in the presence of Ba(OH) 2 . The catalyst is neutralized with acetic acid, the product heated with MgO and an adhesive made by adding the MgO adduct to polychloroprene in a mixture of n-hexane, toluene, acetone and ethyl acetate. In Example 3 the catalyst is Ca(OH) 2 . |
