1351611 Making vehicle wheels; welding by pressure GKN SANKEY Ltd 12 July 1971 [14 July 1970] 34080/70 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Division B7] A metal wheel rim 11 is friction welded to a metal disc 10 by relatively rotating the rim and disc whilst edges 21, 24 only are maintained in contact under axial pressure, and stopping the relative rotation whilst continuing the axial pressure. During the welding process, the cylindrical portions 19, 23 of the disc and rim are free from contact with any locating or other extraneous member. The portions 19, 23 are of sufficient axial dimensions that neither the rim nor the disc undergo flaring distortion (defined in the Specification) during formation of the welded joint. A gutter lip 16 is provided on a channel section part 17 of the rim and retains a detachable tyre-retaining flange 15. |
