1364674 Carbon molecular sieve BERGWERKSVERBAND GmbH 2 July 1971 [23 April 1971] 31168/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Carbon is deposited in the pores of coke to produce a molecular sieve by contacting the coke with a carbon-evolving organic compound, e.g. a hydrocarbon, at a temperature in the range 600‹ to 900‹ C. for from 1 to 60 minutes. The coke should have a V.M.C. not exceeding 5% by weight, and a particle size in the range 0À1 to 20 mm. and it may be derived from coal, anthracite, brown coal, peat, coconut shell, wood, petroleum, plastics materials and active carbon, and coke and/or carbon may be briquetted or coal may be pelletized with pitch, bitumen, tar or tar oil before being coked. Contacting materials include benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, methane, ethane, hexane, cyclohexane, ethylene, acetylene, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, ethylene chloride and carbon tetrachloride, and may be the gases produced during coking of the briquettes or pellets with or without the addition of other hydrocarbons. Coking and contacting may be carried out in the same or different vessels and the temperature of the coke may be raised at 3‹ to 10‹ C. per minute until the contacting temperature is reached. |
