Novel plasminogen activator having certain specific properties. The plasminogen activator can be prepared by subjecting a human kidney or human blood vessel to an extraction treatment with an ammonium thiocyanate solution and then causing the resultant extract to pass through a column loaded with an ion exchange material, a column loaded with a metal chelate, a column loaded with L-arginine or an arginine derivative bound on a carrier, a column loaded with a hemagglutinin bound to a carrier, or a column loaded with a carrier having molecular sieve effect to purify same. A thrombolytic agent containing the plasminogen activator as an active ingredient exhibits a strong thrombolytic activity but shows little side effects.
