The present invention relates to phthalimide compounds of the formula (I) <IMAGE> (I) wherein X denotes H or halogen, for example chlorine or bromine, a and b independently of one another denote 0 or 1 and R denotes a C1-C4-alkyl radical, which, in combination with alkali metal salts, are suitable as flameproofing agent combinations for thermoplastic, branched, aromatic polycarbonates, and the preparation of these compounds.
