Aldehydes of formula R6R7C.CR5. (CR3R4)n.CHR2.CHR1.CH2CHO (where R1-R7 are H, Me or Et, and n is 0-4), useful in the prodn. of biologically active materials and as perfumes, are prepd. by reaction of diolefins of formula: R6R7C:CR5. (CR3R4)n.CHR2.CR1=CH2 with CO and H2 at 60-180 degrees C/30-1500 atm. in the presence of a Rh carbonyl complex.
