1354102 Vehicle starting systems JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 20 July 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 39875/70 Heading H2H In a starting system for a road vehicle comprising a battery 11 and a starter motor 13 connected thereacross through solenoid contacts 12, the solenoid includes hold-in and pull-in windings 14, 15 each having one end connected to the battery through the starter switch 16 and both being wound on a common core with the pull-in winding 15 overlying the hold-in winding 14 (Fig. 2, not shown). Closure of switch 16 energizes the windings to close contacts 12, whereupon winding 15 is shortcircuited and the contacts are held closed by winding 14 until the engine starts and the switch is reopened. It is stated that with the above winding arrangement there is obtained a lower drop-out voltage than hitherto with only a small sacrifice in the voltage required to close the contacts 12, thus ensuring that these do not reopen before the engine has started. |
