Automatic precoating process relating to a filtration apparatus using diatoms and intended for the clarification of liquids such as musts, alcohol, fruit juices and particularly wine, which consists in diverting via a parallel circuit 3, 15 a small fraction of the liquid flow to the fraction of pressurised liquid feed 7 of the vessel 1 in order to direct it to the base of a tank 17 for suspending the pulverulent filter substance and reinjecting the suspension into the liquid flow upstream of the vessel 1 and an apparatus for implementing the process, additionally made up of a perforated feed distributor 16 for suspending, ensuring an automatic stirring of the liquid by virtue of its slot-shaped openings and of the semicylindrical shape of the tank 17, of a vessel 1 fitted so as to rotate about an axis parallel to its filtering walls, which is fed via journals and embodying the axes of rotation, and of shutter discs provided under the filter elements 4 when the latter are employed horizontally. <IMAGE>
