The lightning arrester comprises first and second electrodes 11, 12 defining central portions 113, 123 positioned opposite one another a predetermined distance d from one another and a third electrode 13 in the form of a ring which is interposed between the first and second electrodes 11, 12 around the central portions of these latter and whose internal rim is located a shorter distance from the central portion 113 of the electrode 11 connected to the power transmission conductor 1 than from the central portion 123 of the electrode 12 connected to earth. The third annular electrode 13 and the second electrode 12 connected to earth are connected together by a capacitor 17. Application to the transporting of high currents without damage and with a response time which is compatible with protection from nuclear electromagnetic pulses. <IMAGE>
