A leak detector (1) having a sample inlet (5) for receiving a sample of gas and which is connected to an analyser for sensing the presence of a signal gas in the sample, an impervious, resilient skirt (6) surrounding the sample inlet (5) so that when its open end is placed against a workpiece to be tested a sampling volume is to find within the skirt (6) between the detector (1) and the workpiece, and a compressed air source for producing an air curtain around the skirt (6) between the detector (1) and the workpiece.
