PURPOSE:To enable uniform drying of a tubular gel in high yield and to achieve the mass production of glass tube having high quality, by vertically holding a tubular gel at the center of a drying chamber having conical bottom plate and drying the gel in the chamber. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical drying chamber has a uniformly perforated side wall and the bottom plate of the chamber is formed in the form of a cone having grooves 1. A tubular gel is vertically held at the center of the drying chamber (the deviation from the vertical line is within about + or -5 deg.) and dried to obtain a glass tube by sol-gel process. The deviation of the gel from the center caused by the shrinkage of the gel can be minimized by this process. Since the bottom plate has inclined face, the friction between the gel and the bottom plate is low and the gel can be held at the center by the smooth shrinkage of the gel. Accordingly, the tubular gel can be uniformly dried in high yield without causing the deformation of the gel. |
