PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound relatively simply in high yields and selectivity through one step reaction, by reacting resorcinol with an alkylating agent in an inert solvent, using phosphoric acid with a specific concentration. CONSTITUTION:Resorcinol is reacted with an alkylating agent selected from the group consisting of tertiary butyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol and isobutylene in an inert sulvent, e.g., toluene, xylene, in the presence of phosphoric acid with an initial concentration of 50-65wt%, preferably 55-63wt%, desirably at 50-100 deg.C for 3-6hr to give the desired compound. The amount of phosphoric acid based on resorcinol is not less than 80wt%, preferably 150-400wt%, and the amount of the alkylating agent is 1.0-1.35 times the molar amount of resorcinol. The amount of the solvent is preferably 1-10 times as much as resorcinol. |
