The invention relates to a device making it possible temporarily to cover an area, particularly a travelling market area or other collective space. This device essentially comprises a pole 1 equipped with a base 2 for fixing to the ground in a detachable manner, a bracket 3 made in one piece fixed at its middle in a cradle 4, a covering awning 9 wound around a winding member housed inside the bracket, an irreversible transmission mechanism for causing this member to rotate in one direction or the other and to lock it when there is no driving force, and a connection between the pole and cradle making it possible to lock the said cradle with respect to the pole in different angular positions, particularly in a turned down position in which the bracket is turned down against the pole and in an extended position in which this bracket forms an angle of approximately 90 DEG with respect to the pole; the awning 9 is joined to fastening means enabling its external edge to be fastened along the bracket of a neighbouring device. <IMAGE>
