The mobile unit allows several shots to be fired rapidly and, immediately afterwards, withdrawal from the firing location. The unit comprises a carrier vehicle 1, a mortar 2 mounted via an articulation 4 on a base plate 6. Means are provided to allow the rapid placing of the base plate on the ground in order that the base plate may be supported during firing. These means also allow the raising of the said plate in order to allow the vehicle to withdraw rapidly from the firing location. The principal achievement of these means is to provide the carrier vehicle with a retractable suspension allowing the vehicle to be lowered to the ground. An elastic link 8 is provided between the base plate 6 and the chassis 7 of the carrier vehicle to allow a relative motion of the assembly constituted by the mortar and the base plate with respect to the chassis. This invention is of interest to manufacturers of military equipment. <IMAGE>
