The present invention relates to a toothed wheel (sprocket) as well as to its method of manufacture. It will especially be used, in the field of bicycle or motorbike scrambling, for equipping cycles, motorcycles, moped or the like. The toothed wheel (sprocket) 1 is essentially composed of a disc 2 having a multiplicity of teeth 3 on its periphery, defining a pitch diameter of the teeth and of the tooth spaces 7, the said teeth 3 being designed to interact with the links 4 of a transmission chain 5. According to the invention, the toothed wheel (sprocket) 1 comprises means for increasing the pressure of the links 4 of the chain 5 on the mud accumulated in the bottom of each tooth space 7 during its use, interacting with means for evacuating the mud from the bottom of each tooth space 7 so as not to increase the pitch diameter of the teeth. The method of manufacturing the toothed wheel (sprocket) according to the present invention is characterised in that grooves 12 are made successively on the disc 2 by milling or by broaching by means of a tooling framework allowing the automatic positioning of each tooth space 7 opposite a grooving tool. <IMAGE>
