A character carrier (M) is pressed by means of a flexible pressing layer (A) against a wall (18) of a casting mould (F), the pressing layer (A) being supported on an opposite mould wall (21). The pressing layer (A) has a permeable structure, so that it is impregnated by casting composition (V), for example foamed plastic. By virtue of the flexible pressure on the character carrier (M), a close bearing of the subsequently visible surfaces (2a, 6a, 8a) of information characters against the mould wall (18) is achieved, so that the character surfaces are not covered by the casting composition (V). <IMAGE>
